One basic rule of fashion is always about having an elegant balance to your outfits, and this will only go perfectly to this mixing technique if you understand the balance between scales, colors, themes of the patterns. When you’re mixing your own patterns, look for a connection: It could be a color, a shape, a silhouette.

First of all, it is worth recalling that prints can really empower your body silhouette. Horizontal lines can make your figure looks wider while vertical lines do the opposite way. Small prints will make you look subtle, while large patterns really highlight your outfits, as well making you look wider, super busy and heavy.

So, wear your patterns – either small or large – to enhance your best assets and conceal the others. Don’t wear large prints on part of the body you want to hide, and avoid marrying two different large prints if you don’t know the rules. Sometimes, wearing two different super-bold patterns makes it look like you got dressed drunk or in the dark a.k.a not too good.

There are many ways of mixing prints to look polished and not overwhelming. The key is to stick with only two prints and pair your outfit with basic solid accessories, such as bag, belt, jewelleries, or heels. Or you may mix two similar scaled prints – but not two super big ones – as long as you break it up with something solid. Make sure your patterns and textures don’t compete each other.

Having More Creativity With Textures and Patterns Mixing

Texture of the fabrics can definitely add a different dimension to an outfit, and by mixing two different textures along with its balanced patterns and colors, one can easily add edge and interest to your outfit. Silky flower printed blouse, for example, matched with floral skinny jeans in the same theme and color tones can make a great fashion statement that the contrast between silk and leather is both sweet and tough.

One can use fabrics as a contrasting mechanism. In order to achieve this look, stick with a classic silhouette but mixed it up with some contrasting fabrics. A cream silk top is very office appropriate but by pairing it with striking velvet pants, one can achieve a much more modish, chic look. In addition, the silhouette of the velvet pants can add some really nice cinching around the waist that really emphasizes the look. The two fabrics are completely different but when worn together, they create an amazing contrast.

 

Fur + Sequin

 In addition to fabric, one can play with heavy textures, such as fur and sequin. Note that this is rather a bold and ultra glamorous combo given the intrinsic nature of each texture. But, if you’re up for it, the mashup can take your fashion game a step further! You can always start by playing up key details that make a difference – like a sequin dress with a fur clutch. Or you can go with a fur coat and sequin boots – subtle garnishes like this will still make you stand out.

Knit + Patent Leather

The assortments mentioned up to this point are rather dressy, so if you’re looking to mix textures in a more effortless and edgy way, knits with patent leather is the way to go. We love the look of patent leather pants (or a mini skirt) with an oversized sweater and poplin top underneath. There are so many variations of this look you can create, including a sweater dress with patent leather boots.

Metallics + Cotton

Put metallics on your radar for fall and winter. An all-time favorite metallic fabrics goes to lamé. The pearly sheen and light texture always looks stunning. As it has a way of looking opulent all the time, your goal is to somehow tone down the dressiness unless you’re attending a cocktail party. My suggestion is to seek out basic cotton or jersey pieces, such as a graphic tee, sweatshirt, or hoodie.

Adding contrasting material, playing with texture, and topping it off with unique accessories are just some of the ways to produce an outfit that makes you stand apart from the crowd. Secret Tip: silk, velvet, PVC and holography would make such a gorgeous combination.
