Difference between Rayon & Viscose Fabric

- By Bhumika Ahuja

Rayon and Viscose  fabrics are two of the most popular fabrics used in the fashion industry. While they look similar, there are some subtle differences between them that can be important when making a purchase decision. In this article, we will explore the properties, differences, and facts about Rayon and Viscose  fabric to help you make an informed decision.

The primary distinction between rayon  and viscose  is that the former is more environmentally friendly, less expensive, and has a higher absorption capacity, whilst the latter is a softer fabric with greater durability.

The cellulose absorption method is used to create rayon, a type of fabric, whereas the cellulose carboxylate process is used to create viscose, another type of fabric. Both rayon and viscose are used by manufacturers to create home and apparel textiles, particularly curtains and sheets.

Let’s now compare both fabrics:-

Rayon  is a cloth made from cellulose that has been immersed during manufacture. So, wood pulp is used to create rayon. Despite the fact that many chemicals are required to create this fabric, rayon  is not a synthetic fabric. The fundamental reason for this is that rayon fabric is a synthetic imitation of natural polymers.

The potential for absorption of rayon  is greater than that of viscose and other cotton fibers. This is why  rayon  fabric is commonly used in the furniture industry, where it is most frequently used by producers to create bed sheets, blankets, and curtains. In the medical industry, producers of bandages and surgical masks also employ rayon. rayon may fast absorb any liquid in comparison to viscose;

                                                             Whereas

Viscose  is a type of fabric created by the cellulose carboxylate method. It is made of plant fibers. Viscose is frequently thought of as a produced fabric; throughout cellulose large molecular weight manufacturing, the plant fabric is first dissolved and then chemically rebuilt.

Viscose  has a softer texture than rayon and other fabric materials. As a result, it is widely used in the apparel industry to make shirts, coats, jackets, pants, dresses, and linings. Due to its softness, manufacturers frequently utilize this cloth to make disposable wipes. The touch-screen surfaces of smartphones and other electronic gadgets can also be cleaned and wiped with viscose fabric.

   Let’s jump on the similarities!

  •         Both rayon and viscose  are textile fabrics.
  •         Viscose is also a rayon  variant, although they are not identical.
  •         Both rayon and viscose  are used by manufacturers to create home and apparel textiles, particularly curtains and sheets.

Some of the key factors are as follows:

  1.   Source Materials

Viscose  and  rayon  are produced by mafibersurers from plant fibres and wood pulp, respectively.

  1.   Texture

When compared to rayon, viscose is softer.

  1.   Durability

Fabric made of rayon  has a lower natural durability than that viscose.

  1.   Absorbance

Viscose is less able to absorb moisture than rayon.

  1.   Cost

Additionally, rayon  is more economical than viscose.

  1.   Weather circumstances

Both textiles are breathable, however, rayon  has a tiny advantage because it resembles breathable silk fabric. Viscose  keeps you warm even in milder climates, while Rayon  is ideal in hot climates.

In summary, the fundamental distinction between rayon and viscose is that the former is more environmentally friendly, less expensive, and has a larger capacity for absorption, but the latter is softer and more durable.
